(Senior) Backend Engineer Java/Spring

We are looking for:

For our Tech team in Romania, we're looking for a (Senior) Backend Engineer Java/Spring on full-time employment contract (work setup is flexible: remote or hybrid, based on preference) who is excited to influence and develop together with us product features and the technical stability of backend system using Java with Spring Boot. You enjoy architecting, building, securing and maintaining complex backend system, managing technical debt, testability and delivering compelling features that our users love.

As part of the engineering team you will help bring the smoothest door-to-door travel experience to our users and through our products.

Your Tasks:

You iteratively work on product priorities, while improving the stability, testability and code quality of backend applications with your technical know-how
You’re a best practices evangelist – promote best practices and address technical challenges of backend engineering in a knowledge-sharing environment
Continuously work to bolster backend system design, implementation and delivery processes in order to improve quality and efficiency
You’re a technical leader – help shape and advance the technical culture at Voya that will ultimately define every interaction users have with our products and services
Collaborate on a daily basis with a small, nimble team of product managers and engineers to understand business requirements, technical goals and pain points

Your Profile:

As a Senior Backend Engineer you take ownership, autonomy, and accountability over your area of expertise. We're looking for someone who’s highly committed to technical quality and has a high drive to achieve business-level goals in a holistic and scalable technical fashion, while openly promoting a knowledge-sharing culture.

We expect you to:

Be proficient in Spring and Java environments and related technology stacks, and in at least two out of the following: Spring WebFlux & reactive streams, Spring Cloud Stream, message brokers (RabbitMQ / Kafka), distributed caches (Redis), relational and non-relational databases
Have at least 3-5 years of experience with software development for cloud-based applications (ideally Azure) and development of high-performance APIs
Know your way around DevOps topics like implementation, deployment, architecture and IT operations, with at least two out of the following: GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, Azure cloud services
Have experience with agile methodologies, and are motivated to pick out the leanest solutions
Comfortably push for good test coverage – be intimately familiar with unit and integration testing
Thrive and make an impact in a dynamic start-up environment, with little hierarchy, where finding the right balance between quality and speed is key
Have excellent collaboration skills, as you will work with most teams involved in the product business processes
Drive integration of new technologies, clean coding principles and best practices, while staying highly aligned with the product and company goals
Be a citizen / long-term resident of Romania

Salary range: 14k-19k RON (net/month)
Employment type: Full employment contract

Our core working hours are 11-4 pm (CET or EET) and we expect you to be available during these hours to facilitate collaboration within the team. How you want to organise the rest of your working hours is up to you – early birds, night owls and everybody in between is welcome.

Remote work and offices – We operate on a remote work model and have offices in Bucharest and Hamburg. Nonetheless, you're free to choose if you want to come to the office or work remotely or do a bit of both. We do however value face-to-face interactions from time to time. So a willingness to travel to meet in-person is helpful. #LI-Hybrid
